Launching as part of the three-piece ‘Protection Pack,’ the New Balance 2002R ‘Rain Cloud’ applies a greyscale finish to a revamped iteration of the lifestyle runner. The breathable grey mesh upper is fortified with raw-edged suede overlays, their uneven lines conveying the impression that the material had eroded over time. An exposed foam tongue accentuates the shoe’s deconstructed aesthetic. Lightweight cushioning is provided by a distressed ABZORB midsole, which is paired with an N-ergy outsole for improved impact protection.

Prepared in three colorways — “Rain Cloud, “Phantom,” and “Sea Salt” — the range sees the classic 2010 silhouette dressed in distress; an aesthetic not-too-dissimilar to CDG’s work with Nike. The textural suede panels arrive in a similar vein to that seen on the Japanese label’s Air Force 1 Mid, with each cut and extended past their typical design lines. Drawing from its namesake, additional pieces are laid atop the traditional paneling, again drawing similarities to Nike — this time to the recently-revealed Nike Dunk Scrap. Exposed foam tongues, scratchy outsoles, and aged-look midsoles round out the rough-cut designs.
